Meet Ashley Lucyk, Pompton Lakes Prevention Coalition Coordinator

Ashley Lucyk

Where did you grow up?

  • Born and raised in Pompton Lakes, NJ. I graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 2012.

When did you start working for the Borough of Pompton Lakes?

  • July 2018

What are your primary duties?

  • As the Coalition Coordinator, I am responsible for the coordination of the Pompton Lakes Municipal Alliance, Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant and other coalition grants that the town is awarded. It is up to me to ensure that all requirements of the Pompton Lakes DFC grant are met. I coordinate monthly coalition meetings, and produce the agenda and minutes. I continually work on building capacity and expanding the coalition’s involvement in the community. I ensure that current data and community trends are collected, analyzed, and utilized for coalition efforts, including the creation of and updating of the logic model and action plans of the Coalition. I promote coalition platforms via press releases, advertising, media, flyers, community events, and other means deemed beneficial for increasing awareness. I coordinate and conduct parent/youth/community presentations as needed on behalf of the coalition. I attend trainings and meetings as needed or required as the Coalition representative from Pompton Lakes and manage special projects (such as Sticker Shock campaign, TIPS trainings, etc.) for the coalition. Lastly, I conduct Town Hall meetings on specific focuses (Underage Drinking, Prescription Drugs, Marijuana, or Vaping) annually or as outlined by grant requirements.

What do you think people don't know about the Pompton Lakes Prevention Coalition, in addition to your job, specifically, that you could share?

  • Many people are aware of many of our advertised events and public presentations. However, many people are not aware that behind the scenes and less advertised, the Coalition also provides presentations on current drug trends to the Pompton Lakes High School faculty and Lakeside Middle School faculty every year. The Coalition is also involved with the Health and Wellness Coalition (HAWC) club in the high school, and I attend their meetings regularly to assist the students in their prevention efforts. This year, the Coalition and HAWC collaborated and arranged a full-school assembly on Vaping: A New Generation of Nicotine Addiction to the student body at the high school. People often are not aware that Coalition meetings are open to the public. We encourage residents to attend a meeting and hear what we are working on!

Did you always see yourself working in borough government, or in government in general?

  • If you told me years ago that I would one day work for the borough, I would not have believed it! That is, until I found the world of Public Health and Health Education and became interested in intervention and prevention. I worked briefly for the county’s substance abuse prevention agency, United for Prevention in Passaic County, which spiked my interest in this field and working for the Borough.

What are the goals and objectives of the Prevention Coalition in the next year?

  • In this next year, the Coalition will be carrying out our many prevention-focused activities and presentations as we usually do. We will be collecting local data via a needs assessment, to re-evaluate our needs here in Pompton Lakes. We attend the National Night Out, Pompton Day, and Back To School Night events and table with all sorts of resources and giveaways. Our goal, as always, is to create prevention prepared communities through a collaborative effort to reduce underage drinking, marijuana use, the misuse of opioids and prescription drugs, heroin use and new and emerging drugs across the lifespan.

What are your hobbies, interests?

  • I really enjoy hiking.

What are some upcoming events/programs that the Prevention Coalition is hosting this year?

  • We will host two presentations that will be open to the community. Follow us on Facebook, join our email list, or check the Borough website or Newsletter for the announcement of the presentations!
